The Röcklturm, once a defense tower, was part of the medieval city wall and is now a popular cultural destination for art lovers in Landshut. The visit of interesting temporary exhibitions and the possibility to enjoy a meal or a cool drink outside in sunny weather offers the opportunity to escape from everyday life, especially in summer.
At the end of the 14th century, the residential town of Landshut was largely left to its own devices for several years. City councils, municipal committees and guilds secured important rights of co-determination in city affairs during this period. When Duke Heinrich XVI took up his reign in 1404, there was a trial of strength between him and the town’s citizens in 1408. On August 24, he invited 40 city councilors to dine at the Trausnitz Fortress. After the meal, they were arrested and sentenced, and their assets were confiscated.
In the course of these power struggles, a conspiratorial meeting of 31 community members with their wives allegedly took place in the house of the burgher Dietrich Röckl on the west side of the city wall below the Ländtor on the Isar River on Good Friday night, March 21, 1410, but Röckl’s wife betrayed them. Most of them paid for this with their lives. Duke Henry XVI was thus able to prevent another possible uprising, secure his rule over the city and fill his empty coffers.
To this day, the „Röcklturm“, which was used as a residential tower after 1493, is a reminder of this uprising of the citizens against Henry „the Rich“. Even if it is not entirely historically certain whether the events really took place at this exact location, the Röcklturm is still a contemporary witness to an important historical turning point in Landshut.
As part of the city walls of Landshut, the Röcklturm takes on its Gothic appearance in the 14th century. Earlier, there was a second similar tower nearby. Both of them were used as dwellings by the fishermen of Landshut time and again. That is why the Röcklturm was also known as „Oberer Ländturm“ or „Oberer Fischerturm“ or „Fischmeistersturm“ – only since the 16th century it has been called „Röcklturm“. From 1988 to 1990 it was carefully renovated. Since then, its historical rooms on three floors are used for temporary exhibitions by artists from the surrounding area.
From May to October, the art exhibitions are open Tuesdays to Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm. Admission to the exhibitions is generally free.
Despite its renovation, the historic charm of the tower has been preserved and forms an excellent opportunity to optimally present the lovingly curated exhibits, predominantly with a literary accent. One focus is on book illustrations, but contemporary art, urban and cultural history are also thematized. In this way, the changing exhibitions offer, among other things, not only colorful cultural delights, but certainly also insights into the history and development of the city of Landshut and its inhabitants. At times, old, unknown photographs of Landshut buildings and streets dating back more than a century are shown. Visitors are encouraged to help locate the pictures and to contribute their personal stories to the exhibits. Past and future seem to merge. A walk through this exhibition is partly like leafing through a captivating history book.
It is possible that before or after visiting the exhibition, especially during the summer exhibition months, the question of a refreshment option comes to the visitor’s mind. The first floor of the Röcklturm is leased and has housed the Literature Café since 2004. Here you can sit in a pleasant atmosphere, if desired also with beach chairs on the lawn under the trees directly on the Isar, watch the hustle and bustle on the promenade and relax perfectly.
In addition, there are numerous other options in the immediate vicinity of the Röcklturm and the Isar Promenade. The offer ranges from local and international cuisine, from hearty delicacies to delicious desserts or you can simply enjoy a refreshing drink. At the same time, there are also many opportunities to let yourself be pampered by the sun’s rays outdoors. This seems to dissolve all worries and make way for the enjoyment of the unique moment.
The sturdy stone walls of the Röcklturm bear witness to the craftsmanship of bygone eras. Running your fingers over the cool, weathered stones, you can imagine the generations that have passed through here.
The Röcklturm, its historical backdrop, its captivating exhibits and a great environment await you. Take a little cultural time out and enjoy the special summer in a whole new way!
